KJ Charles

People...I love a good story. And lucky for me, there are thousands out there. But sometimes, when you’re looking for something in particular, it can be hard to find exactly the thing you want. This is especially true if you’re on the hunt for decent erotica. And you can double the difficulty if you’re looking for a good audiobook of erotica, because the wrong narrator can turn even the spiciest sex scene into something akin to “My Dad Wrote a Porno.”

It is for this reason that I would like to share with you a recent discovery. Nay, a revelation! If you’re in the market for some saucy homo-erotic fiction audiobooks to keep you warm during the long winter nights ahead, there’s two names I’d like to introduce you to: KJ Charles & Cornell Collins.

KJ Charles is an author who writes some of the sauciest gay historical fiction novels you’ve probably never heard of (until now) and Cornell Collins is a talented narrator who will make you believe you’re literally sharing a room with two men having wildly delicious sex. In these times of uncertainty and isolation, these delightful audio productions are a balm to the soul. Equal parts wholesome, romantic and downright filthy with strong messages about consent, tolerance and kindness. Here are some titles you should check out:

Any Old Diamonds

Alec is the son of a Duke. And the Duke is an utter bastard. So Alec decides to hire some jewel thieves to rob his father and step-mother’s castle.

But the castle is in the middle of fucking nowhere. So he has to get the thieves invited to the castle for dinner in order to pull off the heist!

Enter Jerry Crozier. Thief extraordinaire and master of disguise. He and Alec need to feign a high society friendship to secure the invitation to the Duke’s castle for an upcoming party.

In the mean time though, both Alec and Crozier discover some shared...pursuits. They discover them in public parks, in shady hotels, and at fancy parties. It’s delicious! And all the while the plot unfolds with unexpected twists and jilted lovers and thievery and murder - it’s fucking magnificent.

Favourite bit:

With the intrigue and betrayal and thievery throughout the story, it would have been easy to paint Crozier as a ‘bad boy’ whose charm is in his being a complete scoundrel. And he is definitely a scoundrel! But where many writers will use toxic masculinity to demonstrate the ‘badness’ of their bad boys, KJ Charles has no truck with such laziness. What is unexpectedly uplifting about this story (and all of KJ Charles’ work) is that Crozier takes the time to process his emotions in a mature and well adjusted way, instead of just being a dick about things. It’s such a wonderful demonstration of self awareness and exemplifies what healthy emotional regulation looks like. So inbetween the titillating public buggery, your heart absolutely melts at some top notch interpersonal communication.

The Magpie Lord

Lucien is the son of fancy pants Lord Crane. But Lord Crane is an utter bastard who sent Lucien to China for 20 years because he didn’t like his face. Good news though, Lord Crane is dead! So now Lucien can come home from China and claim his title as Lord Crane (Long Live Lord Crane).

But there’s danger afoot! It looks like maybe his father’s death wasn’t so much from natural causes as supernatural ones! He’s going to need the assistance of a magician, and fast.

Enter Stephen Day, magician extraordinaire and victim of the late Lord Crane’s villainy. He isn’t too enthused about helping the new Lord Crane out of his current pickle, but there’s something different about Lucien. Aside from the full body tattoos and the conversations in Chinese there’s the fact that he’s clearly trying to get Stephen into bed.

But there’s no time for fucking while there’s a murder conspiracy afoot! And a magically charged one at that. Stephen and Lucien need to try and solve the mystery before they both end up dead.

Favourite bit:

There is a delightful undercurrent of kink throughout Lucien and Stephen’s relationship. While Charles’ other work is very explicit, The Magpie Lord is more about the tease, spending the majority of the novel building up the tension between the two and alluding to the Dom/sub dynamic that’s evolving. All of this comes to very satisfying fruition in the final chapter and epilogue of the novel. It not only consummates the physical relationship between the two, but also addresses what their ongoing emotional relationship will look like. It’s completely heartwarming and delightful!

Band Sinister

Sir Philip is a disgraceful rake and an atheist (gasp!) and the rumours about his hellfire club can only be spoken in whispers (orgies, it's orgies).

Meanwhile, a short distance away, Guy and his sister, Amanda, are living in rural seclusion after a family scandal. But when Amanda breaks her leg in a riding accident, she's forced to recover at Sir Philip’s manor, where he’s currently hosting his hellfire club - scandal!

Guy rushes over to protect his sister (and her reputation), but it turns out this hellfire club isn't what he expected…and neither is Sir Philip. Dashing, charming...seductive. But what about his sister’s reputation? Holed up in a den of iniquity with a collection of known scoundrels - her rep would be ruined if word got out. But then, Sir Philip makes such persuasive arguments against departing…

Favourite bit:

Guy is a character who has never acted on his desires. Sir Philip is a character who does nothing but act on his desires. Instead of it being a story about Guy being ravished by his social superior, it is instead a beautiful conversation about consent and the importance of boundaries and taking the time to teach someone who isn’t as experienced. And all of this manages to make it even hotter! Not to mention the whole story finishes with a flourish of ethical non-monogamy - so fucking delightful!
